Each day will be exciting. You will be fascinated by how close you are to the wildlife. Each night will be an awakening of your senses. As you try to fall asleep, you will be dazzled by the echoing sounds of the animals passing close to camp. Sometimes so close that you can hear them breathing! Why this itinerary

The Safari Tour will give you the privilege of observing the wildlife in their natural habitats. During your safari, whether camping or lodging, you will visit the best of Tanzania´s wildlife parks, including Lake Manyara, The Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park and Tarangire National Park.

Day1: Arusha – Tarangire National Park

After a safari briefing in the morning and an approximate 2 hour drive you will arrive at the Tarangire National Park. Giant baobab trees, bush savannah and the seasonal marshes add to the wonder of this nature reserve. The Tarangire National Park is considered as one of the best places to view elephants up close, not only because there are thousands of animals but also because they are not disturbed by the presence of vehicles. The park is also home to buffaloes, zebras and wildebeests which are always closely followed by a range of predators such as lions. Leopards are seen now and then but cheetahs are rarely spotted. From the open roof of the safari vehicle you will be able to absorb the landscape and watch the animals until the sunset hours, overnight at Tarangire Sopa Lodge inside the park,

Day 2: Tarangire Park – Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast you will travel from the Tarangire to the Lake Manyara National Park. The park is known for its over 400 bird species, primate-filled forests and grassy plains. A large area of the park is covered by the alkaline Lake Manyara, the seasonal breeding grounds for large colonies of flamingos and many more waterfowls. The park is also home to giraffes, hippos, wildebeests, impalas and groups of noisy monkeys and baboons. After an extensive game drive leave the park and drive to the lodge where you will be spent the night at Kudu Lodge,

Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater

Rise and shine! After breakfast drive and descend into the Ngorongoro crater floor for a full day game drive. The massive collapsed volcano is home to over 25,000 mammals ranging from the “Big Five” – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard to spotted hyenas, rare wild dogs and some of the more than 500 bird species of the area. After an extensive game drive and a picnic for lunch, you will leave the caldera in the late afternoon and return to your lodge for dinner and overnight at Kudu Lodge,

Day 4: Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you will travel via the cooler highlands towards the southern Serengeti and at midday you will reach the plains of the Serengeti National Park. This park is the largest in Tanzania and has a diversity of habitats and landscapes – short grass plains, savannah, thick bush, swamps and lakes. Bizarre rock formations called kopjes dot the grassy landscape where predators are often seen. The Serengeti is famous for the yearly migration when hundreds of thousands of wildebeests and zebras trek to find fresh grass and water. You will spend the night at Serengeti Sopa Lodge.

Day 5: Serengeti National Park

The entire day is dedicated to game viewing in the Serengeti National Park. The areas that you visit will depend upon where the migrating herds are. Predators usually follow closely behind the trekking animals and include lions, leopards (in the acacia trees) and cheetahs. During the short rainy season in November and December the herds move from the hills in the north to the plains in the south. During the longer rainy season from April to June they return up north. As the migration is completely dependent on the yearly rainfalls, the location of the herds may vary from year to year but your guide will know where to locate the animals and where to see them best. You will spend another night at Serengeti Sopa Lodge.

Day 6: Serengeti National Park – Karatu

On your outward journey to the park gate, you will enjoy some more game viewing before you leave the Serengeti National Park in the early afternoon to continue your journey to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area check out and head to Kudu Lodge Tree

LOCATION

Zanzibar is a legendary archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 35 km off the coast of mainland Tanzania. It is just six degrees south of the Equator. Zanzibar is comprise of the islands of Unguja and Pemba, along with a number of smaller isles. However, it is arguably one of Africa’s most enticing destinations and exotic laid-back paradise. Zanzibar has miles and miles of white sandy beaches and translucent turquoise warm waters.

CLIMATE

Generally the climate in Zanzibar is warm all year round. However, the heat of summer (corresponding to the Northern Hemisphere winter) is often cooled by strong sea breezes. This is mostly associated with the Northeast monsoon, particularly on the North and east coasts. Rains occur in November but are characterized by brief showers. Longer rains normally occur from March to May in association with the Southwest monsoon.

UNESCO declared Stone Town in 2000 to a World Heritage Site with the words “it is an outstanding material manifestation of cultural fusion and harmonization”. Stone Town

We offer a half day tour of Stone Town that can be combined with other activities such as Spice Farm (Stone Town served on Spices), Prison Island (Prisoners of Stone Town), Jozani Forest & Butterfly Center (Zanzibar’s nature and its Capital) and Sunset Cruise. It all depends on the guest’s preference.

Prison Island

Prison Island gets its name from the prison which was built on it in 1893. It was never actually used as a prison but rather as a quarantine hospital. After a 30min boat ride with a beautiful view of Stone Town’s skyline, guests will meet the contemporary inhabitants of the island and the giant tortoises which were banned from the city of Stone Town which are more than 200 years old. We offer Prison Island as a half day tour that can be combined with a tour of Stone Town: Prisoners of Stone Town.

Spice Farm: A tour of one of Zanzibar’s Spice Farms is a must-do on the island. During a walking tour through the farm, guests will be shown and explained each and every spice one can find in Zanzibar. Guests will get a chance to sample majority of the fruits grown on the island and some coconut. We offer this tour as a half day trip, in combination with Stone Town or Jozani Forest & Butterfly Center.

Jozani Forest and Butterfly Center

During a guided tour through the Jozani National Park, guests will see the different species of monkeys, impressive trees and plants. Guest will uncover the magical world of the Zanzibari mangroves while walking along the wooden trail. This tour is combined with a visit to the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre to learn about the life cycle of a butterfly and see them flying in close proximity. We offer this tour as a half day tour or as a full day tour including local lunch in combination with Stone Town (Zanzibar’s Nature and its capital).

One Thousand Hands Of Zanzibar

On this half day tour the guests will get the chance to see the typical village life of Zanzibar and the turtle sanctuary in Nungwi. The guests will be taken to all the places where the real and normal life of a typical Zanzibarian happens. What they do with their hands is incredible.

Safari Mnemba Atoll

On this full day tour, the guests will be picked up from their respective lodging and head with a dhow from Kendwa to the stunning Mnemba Atoll – and with every possibility of seeing and swimming with dolphins along the way, our guests will stop at Mnemba Kitchwani Reef and at Coral Gardens for snorkeling. This amazing reef with steep slopes offers some great under water topography and a chance to see amazing corals and a lot of different species of fish. At the end of the trip our guests will enjoy a mouthwatering lunch and relax on the beautiful secluded beach of Muyuni Beach.

Sunset Cruise

This 2 hour boat trip can either start from the Northern Coast of the Island, to watch the world famous sunset of Zanzibar’s North Coast or it can start from Stone Town where guests can enjoy the best view of the capital from the water. Snacks and drinks are provided on the traditional wooden dhow and if the wind allows the crew, they will sail like the traditional fishing boats while you listen to traditional Zanzibar music.

The Rock Restaurant

The unique location of this restaurant is an attraction in itself. If the tide is high, guests can use a boat to get to the restaurant – or even swim; and when the tide is low, they can simply walk.

HIKING

MARANGU ROUTE 6 DAYS

Description

The original route up Kilimanjaro remains a popular choice for many visitors. Accommodation is in shared huts with bunk beds and the ascent is via Gilman’s point on the rim of the Kibo Volcano. This route descends the same way it ascends.

Highlights

Kilimanjaro: afromontane forest, Mawenzi, glacial valleys and alpine desert, ascent of Kibo and possible views of Kibo caldera and ash pit. Glaciers and the roof of Africa!

Why this itinerary?

For those that can’t bear sleeping in a tent or during the wettest months, the Marangu Route remains a good choice. It is, however, very busy and does not see as much of the mountain as western routes.

MANDARA HUTS

After breakfast you depart by vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Park. At the gate your crew finalise packing and after finishing with formalities you start hiking from Marangu Gate. A picnic lunch is taken on route and in the afternoon, you arrive at Mandara Hut. An option of a short walk can be taken to Maundi Crater in the afternoon if desired.

HOROMBO HUTS (ACCLIMATIZATION DAY)

Today is essentially an acclimatization day, which can be as long or as short as you want it to be. To improve your acclimatization, we walk to higher altitude towards Mawenzi Volcano. If the weather is good, the views once at the half way point of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo are spectacular. Behind you the deeply eroded Mawenzi peak is linked forever by the glacially smoothed saddle to Kibo, the main peak. The younger Mawenzi has been continually eroded for at least 400,000 years whilst Kibo has continued to grow and remains dormant to this day. In the afternoon you return to Horombo Huts to relax.

DAY 4

kIBO HUT

You start off early to the final hut before the summit attempt. Your crew ensure that water is collected at the last water point whilst you progress slowly up onto the saddle. Here desolate alpine zone stretches out towards the base of Kibo. Progress is slow in this hypoxic (low oxygen) environment but by mid-afternoon you reach Kibo Hut to relax before the evening ascent. A relatively early dinner is taken and then you climb into your sleeping bags for some rest before your night time departure for the summit.

SUMMIT BID / HOROMBO HUTS

Rising early (normally before midnight) you start out from Kibo Hut towards the peak. At night time the scree sections are normally much firmer and the night time start enables the best chance of a clear summit attempt. It takes around 6 hours to reach Gilman’s Point and then a further 1.5 to 2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak (Alt 19,341ft, 5985m) the top of the highest free standing mountain in the world and the roof of Africa! You then descend the same route before a short stop at Kibo Hut for a refuel and rest. By the evening you descend back down to Horombo Huts for dinner and one last sleep.

Why this itinerary?

This 7 day version of the Umbwe Route includes an acclimatisation day at Barranco where guests can walk up and visit Arrow Glacier before heading back to Barranco Camp. Generally recommended for more fit and adventurous types, this route is very steep in the first 2 days. For those that want more of a challenge with less crowds this is a good choice.

Description

This is a 6 day Kilimanjaro hike starting at Umbwe Gate and ascending via Stella Point. Note that it joins the Machame route in the Barranco Valley, and hence has similar levels of people on trail as the Machame Route thereon. There is a night time ascent to the summit and descent is via Mweka Route.

DAY 1

UMBWE CAVES

After breakfast you depart by vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Park. Your first stop is atMachame Gate to collect your permits before getting back in your vehicle and driving to Umbwe Gate. After checking in you set off up through the forest zone. The first day hiking is not overly difficult but certainly steepens towards the latter end of the day. In the late afternoon you arrive in the first camp in time for dinner.

DAY 2

BARRANCO CAMP

The second day ascends from the forest zone into the heath zone and there are some very steep sections here. Taking it easy is essential to allow your body to acclimatise. A picnic lunch is taken on route. Later that afternoon you arrive into Barranco Camp in time to relax for a while before dinner. The views of the Barranco wall and Western breach pertain to events some 60,000 years ago when this whole part of the mountain collapsed.

DAY 3

BARRANCO CAMP (ACCLIMATISATION DAY)

From here there is a short hike to Arrow Glacier Camp (16,086FT / 4903M) where you can enjoy views overlooking Lava Tower while eating a packed lunch before heading back to Barranco Camp.

DAY 4

KARANGA CAMP

From Barranco Camp, famous for its giant groundsels (Senecio species), you ascend the Barranco Wall and hike glacial valleys to Karanga Camp. Today is a relatively short day’s hike and lunch is taken at Karanga camp. The afternoon is spent relaxing and acclimatising. In the evening a practice walk for the summit is taken to make sure you are completely comfortable with the kit you are going to summit in.

BARAFU CAMP

Today is another half day ascending to Barafu Camp. Once again lunch is taken in camp allowing plenty of time to relax before the summit bid. Desolate alpine desert and, at times, strong winds rip over this camp; yet in the evening splendid views of Mawenzi are the norm. A relatively early dinner is taken before heading to rest for the remainder of the evening.

DAY 6

KILIMANJARO SUMMIT / MWEKA CAMP

Most people depart just before midnight for the final summit bid. Patience and persistence are the name of game to reach the summit (Uhuru Peak: 19341ft, 5895m) and by dawn as the first rays of light start to appear, most arrive near the rim. Ascending via Stella Point (Alt: 18,865ft, 5750mtr) affords a relatively short final section to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa! What goes up must come down, however. The first stage is to get back to our base camp for a quick change of clothes and refuel before the long hike downhill to Mweka Camp. The downhill is hard on the knees and walking poles at this stage are highly recommended. You should reach Mweka Camp before dusk for your final night on the mountain.

A 7 day ascent that is relatively gradual. The numbers of hikers on this route tends to be less than Machame or Marangu Routes and the chance of seeing wildlife are higher. Comes highly recommended but note that the drive to the starting point takes a long time and the descent is via the Marangu route – in other words, busy.

Description

A 7 day ascent of Kilimanjaro starting on the Eastern side of the national park. This side of the mountain is relatively dry and has a relatively short forest zone. It skirts the base of Mawenzi and the ascent is via Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak. There is an acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn. The descent is via the Marangu Route.

Description

This is a 7-day Kilimanjaro hike starting at Machame Gate to the south west of the national park. It ascends sharply through afromontane forest, into the heath zone and on to the edge of the remnants of the Shira Volcano. The route then circumnavigates the main peak, Kibo, anticlockwise. En route we pass some spectacular features such as giant steps and glacial valleys. The final ascent is from Barafu Camp. It is a night time ascent to Uhuru Peak via Stella Point. The descent is via the Mweka Route.

Most people depart just before midnight for the final summit bid. Patience and persistence are the name of game to reach the summit (Uhuru Peak: 19341ft, 5895m) and by dawn as the first rays of light start to appear, most arrive near the rim. Ascending via Stella Point (Alt: 18,865ft, 5750m) affords a relatively short final section to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa! What goes up must come down. However, the first stage is to get back to our base camp for a quick change of clothes and refuel before the long hike downhill to Mweka Camp. The downhill is hard on the knees and walking poles at this stage are highly recommended. You should reach Mweka Camp before dusk for your final night on the mountain.

After your summit bid you then descend for a final night on the mountain at Mweka Camp passing back through the heath zone. Endemic proteas, pollinated by Malachite Sunbirds are plentiful.
